In Malaysia, having a pet at home is more typical than ever. Obviously, this has increased demand for a wide range of related products and services, including specialised food, veterinarians, and boarding facilities.

The pet-boarding business is undoubtedly less established, despite large increases in the variety of pet foods and the number of veterinarians practising. This tragic shortage of short-term, well considered pet housing has come to light as Chinese New Year, a hectic travel period for many families, draws near. Kuala Lumpur, Klang Valley area has a considerable number of rich pet owners who struggle to locate places that are appropriate for their canine family members, just like in many other cities.

The pet hotel industry is regarded to have significant development potential given how evidently there is a higher need than there is supply. Additionally, there has been a major shift in the boarding service providers. The market is currently being driven by pet hotels and speciality animal boarding facilities, whereas formerly the service was a low-key add-on provided by veterinarian facilities and pet grooming shops.

Huge Demand

In essence, boarding facilities provide a place for animals to reside temporarily while their owners are away from home or otherwise occupied for a rising number of homes. Such demand frequently peaks around the time of the Chinese New Year.

As with many other major cities in Malaysia, pet boarding facilities are already operational in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya. One such facility is Koon Meng, which specialises in cat care. However, it claimed that it had no open rooms during the CNY time since it had been completely booked since the National Day holiday.

News from the Kenlah pet hotel, which began operations last month, was a little bit better. It acknowledged that as of the end of January this year, it still had a few luxurious rooms available in the Gombak neighbourhood. However, all of its most well-liked lodging options were already completely reserved at that time.

The company conducted extensive study before opening its first pet motel. Cities where pet-related expenditure is exceptionally high, such as Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Ampang, and Gombak, received special attention. This brought to light the challenge faced by families in finding services that can adequately care for their pets while they are away on vacation. It also showed how important a service like this is for young adults who live alone in order to cover responsibilities like job trips and other travel.

Confirming that demand for pet care increases during public holidays, especially National Day and CNY, several individuals advised making reservations far in advance during these times.

Pets who board at upscale facilities have particularly pampered lives. They often reside in specially constructed housing that includes amenities like air purifiers, air conditioning, humidifiers, speakers, and bathrooms. They receive top-notch meals while there and receive regular grooming and exercise.

In contrast to other facilities, Kenlah based its rates on the type of housing selected rather than the size and weight of the animal to be boarded. The organisation provides boarding facilities in four distinct grades: presidential suites, deluxe suites, super luxury suites, and luxury rooms. But as long as its owner is prepared to cover the expenditures, even a little dog—one weighing 5 kg or less—can remain in the presidential outfit.

A premium room costs from RM40 per day, with the presidential suite costing RM500. The latter is equipped with a name-brand sofa, specialised feeding equipment, high-definition live video streaming, heating and cooling capabilities, a humidity control system, and a source of pure water for any animal that is fortunate enough to reside there. In addition to their two essential meals per day, which are all made of quality imported pet food, these exceptionally well-cared-for canines also enjoy afternoon tea. They frequently go for walks and have playdates.

Each pet is given a personal space upon arrival and introduced to the handler who will look after it throughout its stay. To reduce the chance of infection and to ensure that no conflicts might result in injuries, all of the visiting animals are kept apart at all times.

Aside from the regular daily feedings, absentee owners may also establish customised care routines with recorded food and water intake as well as micturition and faeces levels. All of this information is then communicated to the owner. Every guest room includes a webcam as standard equipment, allowing owners to check in on their pets at any time of day or night using a smartphone app.
